Science Education Gets a Lift from Lockheed Martin

Science education in the Manatee County School District received a major boost when Lockheed Martin donated $100,000 to strengthen a series of science-based teaching initiatives. This is the second year in a row Lockheed Martin has contributed $100,000 to enhance science education in the Manatee School District.

Funding from Lockheed Martin helps sponsor the Institute for Science Teaching, a professional development course that allows elementary and middle school teachers to broaden their overall knowledge of a science and sharpens their teaching skills. The Institute for Science Teaching is the result of a unique partnership between Lockheed Marting, the South Florida Museum where the courses are taught, the Manatee Education Foundation, and the Manatee School District.

Close to 200 district teachers are expected to participate in the Institute for Science Teaching by the end of this school year, an effort that will ultimately benefit thousands of students across Manatee County.

In addition to funding the Institute for Science Teaching, Lockheed Martin also sponsored "Space Day" at Kinnan Elementary, the district's Science and Engineering Fair and middle school environmental enhancement programs.
